Class Descriptions

Beginner/Intermediate ATS®
American Tribal Style® belly dance (ATS®) is a modern style of dance created by FatChanceBellyDance® (FCBD®) director, Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman. ATS® is a defined set of movements rooted in the traditional dances of North Africa, Central Asia, and India. ATS® is known for its strong posture, defined isolations, subtle cues, group formations, and improvisational style. ATS® is danced across the world and provides an elegant system for group improvisational belly dance. Join us in learning ATS®, the original tribal style belly dance.

In this class, learn to belly dance by drilling the basics in fun combinations. Then you will have the opportunity to expand on those basics to learn intermediate ATS® moves and variations. Using both slow movements and fast steps we’ll get you dancing in your first class! Each class will include warm up and stretch, posture, one slow move, one fast move, body awareness, and plenty of drills. You are welcome to drop-in as we have plenty of review built into each class. This class will also introduce you to partner and group dancing.

What should I wear? Appropriate dress includes full skirt or yoga pants, choli, short top, tank top or leotard (wear something comfortable that conforms to your body so you can see yourself move) and optional hip scarf. Bare feet or dance shoes only in the dance studio. Hair tied up off the face and neck. You will also need a pair of zils (finger cymbals). For resources, please see your syllabus or speak with a teacher.

Advanced ATS®
In Advanced American Tribal Style® belly dance, students will refine individual technique of the ATS® vocabulary and variations in creative combinations as performance preparation. We will also introduce advanced moves, props, specialty work, and practice dynamic formations and transitions. Attendance in this class is by instructor permission only after demonstrating a sufficient level of understanding of Beginner and Intermediate ATS®. Advanced level students are strongly encouraged to continue to attend Beginner and Intermediate ATS® classes for continued refinement of postures, execution of movements, and zil patterns.

What should I wear? Appropriate dress includes full skirt, choli, and optional hip scarf. Bare feet or dance shoes only in the dance studio. Hair tied up off the face and neck. Zils required.

Playing with ATS® Workshop
These monthly ATS® workshops provide an opportunity for the Arizona ATS® dance community to come together for drills, practice, and innovation. Every month will feature a different focus within ATS®, whether it’s practicing the fundamentals in a new & fresh way or experimenting with new movement dialects. Please see our Google calendar for detailed descriptions of our upcoming workshops. Dancers of all levels are welcome to participate in these workshops. All dancers, regardless of level, should be familiar with the FatChanceBellyDance® American Tribal Style® dance vocabulary*. There may be limited review of a dance move but for detailed instruction on the ATS® vocabulary please join us at The School of Ballet Arizona on Monday nights.

What should I wear? Appropriate dress includes full skirt or yoga pants, short top, tank top or leotard (wear something comfortable that conforms to your body so you can see yourself move) and optional hip scarf. *It is recommended (but not required) that dancers in the Playing with ATS® Workshops have either studied or are currently studying ATS® through a FatChanceBellyDance® Instructor/SisterStudio (like Kamalah’s teachers), follow the FCBD® instructional videos, POWHOW online dance series given through FCBD®, Datura Online ATS® by Colette and/or ITS format that has a basis in ATS® movement.
